Close Encounters

Last Wednesday we were down at the Comox Wharf, hoping to see a Fin whale that had been seen a couple of days prior. You have to understand that this behemoth of 40 ft came into the narrow slit of water between the wharf and the docked boats. I have NO idea how or why this juvenile pulled such a stunt. Wish I'd seen it!

I'd been scanning the water, enjoying all the folks out in their dinghies, sloops, sailboats, kayaks and paddle boards. There was a large ripple in the water about 30ft off the wharf and I watched it for quite a while. Something making that large a ripple is bound to be BIG! And sure enough, two fins hit the surface, one spouted from its blowhole and down the duo went. With camera in hand I was off and running. I managed to get some video and a few still shots before they were gone. A few days later we discovered the two had been Humpback whales. They NEVER come into this area, not in Comox's history. How cool is that??
